Synopsis

Press reception · 5 reviews

Coogler's most personal film and his most ferocious. A horror movie that knows what it's scared of.
A.O. Scott · The New York Times
The dance sequence is the most ecstatic ten minutes in mainstream cinema this year. Maybe this decade.
Richard Lawson · Vanity Fair
Michael B. Jordan plays both Smoke and Stack with such precision you forget they're the same actor by the second act.
Justin Chang · The New Yorker
Ludwig Göransson's score is half of why this film works. The other half is Coogler trusting silence.
David Sims · The Atlantic
A vampire film about Mississippi blues that becomes a film about everything the Delta tried to bury.
K. Austin Collins · Rolling Stone · ★★★★½

Verdict

What works

  • Autumn de Wilde's costuming alone is worth the watch
  • Ludwig Göransson's score recreates Delta blues without pastiche
  • Final-act tonal pivot is risky and pays off

What doesn't

  • Slow burn — first 45 minutes test patience
  • Violence is graphic enough to alienate horror-resistant viewers

Frequently asked questions

What is Sinners about?
Mississippi Delta, 1932. Twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan, dual role) return to their hometown after seven years running rackets in Chicago. They have money, a stolen Studebaker, and a plan: convert their late uncle's barn into a juke joint, hire the best local musicians, and finally bring something good to the place they left. Opening night draws every Black family within fifty miles. The blues is enormous. The whiskey is bootleg. The dancing breaks the floor. And around midnight, three white strangers arrive at the door asking to come in — speaking in a strange formal cadence, refusing food but accepting drink, never quite stepping into the light. Ryan Coogler's first non-franchise film since Fruitvale Station is a horror film, a period piece, and a musical, in roughly equal measure. The vampire mythology is reverse-engineered from Mississippi blues lore — these aren't European aristocrats but something older, something the music itself calls. Ludwig Göransson recorded the soundtrack with surviving Delta bluesmen, and the climactic dance sequence — shot in unbroken IMAX 70mm — is the most ecstatic thing in mainstream cinema this year. The vampires are not the villains, or rather, they are not the only villains. Coogler keeps the Klan in the frame the entire time. By the third act, the question of who is going to be turned has become the question of who has been hunted longer.
