LastPass had two major breaches in recent years, and pricing kept climbing. Bitwarden offers the same core feature set, has been audited multiple times, and the free tier covers what most people need.
What you gain
- Open-source clients on every platform, with the server code public too
- Free tier includes unlimited passwords across unlimited devices
- Self-host option exists if you want full control
- Browser extensions and mobile apps that feel native
What you give up
The web vault UI is functional rather than slick. Emergency access and shared folders are paid features. Family plans are simpler than LastPass but less feature-rich for households with many shared logins.
The math
Bitwarden Premium is $10/year, Family is $40/year for six users. LastPass Premium runs $36/year, Family $48/year. Even paid Bitwarden costs roughly a quarter of LastPass over a five-year window.
Who should switch
Anyone using LastPass who hasn’t already moved. Migration is one CSV import. If you rely on LastPass-only features like Country restrictions you’ve actually configured, audit those first.
