Launched in 2012, it has grown into the VPN industry’s default “safe pick” — and for the most part that reputation is earned on fundamentals rather than marketing spend. But 2026 buyers need to look past the homepage pricing banner, because the gap between what NordVPN advertises and what most people actually pay is one of the widest in the category.

Security & encryption

The technical core is solid. NordVPN’s default protocol, NordLynx, is a proprietary implementation of WireGuard wrapped in a custom double-NAT system that closes WireGuard’s original privacy weakness — the need to store client IPs to route traffic. NordVPN runs roughly 9,500 servers across around 149 countries by its own count (independent spot-checks land closer to 118–137 depending on how virtual vs. physical locations are counted). That depth means better load distribution and more consistent speeds at peak hours than VPNs running a few hundred servers, and it underpins a P2P-optimized pool across 47+ locations.

NordVPN is a strong deal at the 2-year Basic rate and a mediocre one at the $14.99–$29.99 month-to-month rate — a nearly 4x spread that exists specifically to push long, upfront commitments. The bigger trap is renewal: the promo rate applies only to the initial term, and the post-renewal price is substantially higher and not prominently disclosed. Buying the 2-year plan? Calendar a cancellation-review reminder for month 23, not month 25.

Who should buy it

Buy NordVPN if you want the deepest no-logs audit history in the industry, top-tier WireGuard speeds, and you’re willing to commit to a 1- or 2-year term and actively manage renewal. Skip it if you only want a VPN core without the password-manager / cloud-storage bundling — a cheaper, VPN-only competitor will serve you better — or if you specifically need month-to-month flexibility without paying a premium for it.
