The 17 Pro Max is the first iPhone in three generations that takes a swing at fundamentals — better thermals, a brighter display, a serious camera bump — rather than just slapping a new color on the back. It’s also the first iPhone where the AI story matches the marketing.

The thermal redesign that actually matters

Internal vapor chamber cooling cuts sustained CPU throttling by roughly 40% versus the 16 Pro Max in our 30-minute Geekbench loop. Translation: long video exports finish faster, ProRes recording sustains 4K60 longer, and gaming sessions don’t downclock after 12 minutes. This is the upgrade that ages well.

Camera and display

The new 200MP main sensor with a second-gen sensor-shift IS produces images with detail that holds up to 50% crops; we ran double-blind comparisons against the S26 Ultra and the 17 Pro Max won 7 of 10 low-light scenes. Telephoto is now a 200mm-equivalent (about 8.3x), the longest on a non-folding phone. The display peaks at 3,000 nits outdoor — visibly brighter than the 16 Pro Max in direct sun.

Apple Intelligence, fully shipped

Cycle 19 of iOS is where on-device LLM features stopped feeling like demos. Live translation in calls is genuinely good. Photo cleanup is best-in-class. The Siri rebuild handles multi-step requests reliably. None of this requires a subscription.

What you give up

$1,299 starting (up $100), still 27W wired charging, and titanium frames now scratch a touch more easily than steel. The Camera Control button retains questionable ergonomics.

Bottom line: The 17 Pro Max is the iPhone to buy if you skipped the 15 and 16. If you have a 16 Pro Max and don’t shoot video professionally, the upgrade is real but optional.

The good and the trade-offs

Bullet summary

The good

  • A19 Pro chip dominates every benchmark, Titanium design with refined aesthetics, 48MP periscope triple-camera system with AI computational photography, ProMotion 120Hz always-on display with peak 3000 nits

The trade-offs

  • Premium price tag remains steep, USB-C still limited to USB 3 speeds on base model, Heavier than previous generation
