Shutdown tracker / OpenAI / AI browser
OpenAI killed its own browser. Here is where the agentic web goes next.
OpenAI product lead James Sun announced on July 9, 2026 that ChatGPT Atlas is being sunset, with the browser scheduled to stop working on August 9. Atlas launched in October 2025 but never shipped beyond macOS - Windows, iOS and Android stayed "coming soon" for eight straight months.
Key dates
- Oct 2025ChatGPT Atlas launches on macOS - Windows, iOS and Android promised as coming soon
- Jul 9, 2026OpenAI product lead James Sun announces the Atlas sunset
- Aug 9, 2026Atlas stops working - bookmarks, history and saved passwords do not transfer automatically
Why it happened: Atlas never expanded past macOS in eight months and usage lagged behind a simpler approach. OpenAI decided agentic browsing works better folded into the main ChatGPT desktop app plus a Chrome extension than as a standalone browser.
What to switch to
Perplexity Comet
The only major AI browser that runs on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android - a free core browser with optional agentic features.
Dia (The Browser Company)
The most polished AI-native browsing experience, with tab-aware chat and writing tools.
Microsoft Edge Copilot Mode
AI browsing built into the browser most Windows users already have installed.
Brave Leo
A reverse-proxy, zero-retention AI assistant built into a privacy-hardened browser.
Opera Neon / Opera AI
Free AI browsing with no account required for the core features.
ChatGPT desktop app + Chrome extension
The official OpenAI successor - the Atlas agentic features move here.

How to migrate
- Export your bookmarks to an HTML file before August 9 - Atlas will not transfer them automatically.
- Back up saved passwords, cookies and open tabs manually; none of it moves on its own.
- If you built agentic workflows on Atlas, test the same tasks in the ChatGPT desktop app plus Chrome extension first - it is the official successor.
- If you need Windows, iOS or Android support, move to Perplexity Comet - it is the only major alternative that is not macOS-only.
